The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialized international agency of the United Nations (UN), created on November 16, 1945 in the wake of the devastation and massacres of the Second World War.

According to its constitution, UNESCO’s purpose is to “promote the development of the human personality and the values of humanity”. to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter of the United Nations “.

UNESCO headquarters are located in Paris (France), at 7/9, place de Fontenoy – UNESCO, in the École-Militaire district of the 7th arrondissement. More than fifty offices, institutes and centers around the world are attached to the headquarters, including the Institute for Statistics in Montreal and the International Bureau of Education in Geneva.

UNESCO currently comprises 194 member states and has been headed since 2017 by the Frenchwoman Audrey Azoulay, who succeeds the Bulgarian Irina Bokova.
