Architect Gabriel Davioud built the Théâtre-Lyrique (Théâtre de la Ville) and the Théâtre du Châtelet, both inaugurated in 1862.

Until the end of the 1970s, most of the Châtelet’s productions were revived on a regular basis, ensuring the Theatre’s financial income. In this way, the Châtelet was able to offer the public its prized works on a regular basis (for decades, going to the Théâtre was the only opportunity to see and hear these works), and to continue producing new ones. Year in, year out, the Châtelet manages to maintain a balance between successes and failures( Sacha Guitry’sCharles Lindberg, Le Beau Voyage d’un enfant de Paris, Maria Flora…). Le Tour du Monde en 80 jours (Around the World in 80 Days), with its 3,007 performances, is the benchmark of these successful revivals, to which should be added Valses de Vienne (Vienna Waltzes), Michel Strogoff, L’Auberge du Cheval blanc (The White Horse Inn), Le Chanteur de Mexico (The Singer from Mexico City), L’Aiglon (The Eagle), etc.

Enchantments, operas, plays, ballets, musicals, symphonies, operettas, vaudeville, mysteries, revues, film screenings, jazz, variety shows… what hasn’t the Châtelet played in 160 years!
