Edition 2023: 2nd edition for ASPnet schools

Ibrahim Maalouf was born in Beirut in 1980.
He is the son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, and nephew of writer Amine Maalouf.
From his father, he inherited the exacting standards, rigor and taste for freedom that led him towards music, a choice that was confirmed independently of his family environment.
His father was the inventor of the trumpet. microtonal “This invention was a revolution in the world of brass and Arab music.
Today, Ibrahim Maalouf is the most popular instrumentalist on the French music scene, and his work in blending genres from jazz to pop is recognized worldwide.
He has also written several film soundtracks, and was awarded the César for best film score for ” In the forests of Siberia “by Safy Nebbou.
He also received four Victoires de la musique awards, including “best show or tour of the year” for his concert at Bercy in December 2016.
The following year he was approached by Quincy Jones, who became his manager via Los Angeles-based Quincy Jones Productions.
Throughout his career, numerous artists have called on his services, including Sting, Salif Keita, Amadou Mariam, Tryo, Matthieu Chedid, Lhasa de Sela…
Ibrahim Maalouf has been awarded the medals of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
UNESCO also honored the trumpeter with the title of “Young artist promoting intercultural dialogue between the Arab and Western worlds». Sponsor of UNESCO’s Sound Week in 2021, Ibrahim Maalouf produced the “Nature Morte” soundtrack for the “When the Sound Creates Image” 2023 competition.

Presentation

The UNESCO Sound Week competition “When Sound Creates Image” for the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet) is back again! This year’s soundtrack was composed by Franco-Lebanese instrumentalist Ibrahim Maalouf.
Participants are invited to create a short film based solely on his 1mn47s sound creation.
Projects must be submitted by midnight on December 31, 2022.

Object

Semaine du Son, in collaboration with UNESCO, is organizing the international school competition “When sound creates image”.
The competition is open only to ASPnet member schools.
The soundtrack, composed by Ibrahim Maalouf, is available on the La Semaine du Son website, along with the rules and entry form. The aim of the competition is to invite high school, middle school, primary school and kindergarten students from ASPnet member schools to discover the multiple relationships between image and sound. It also aims to raise awareness of the need for attentive listening as a trigger for visual creativity. This year’s theme is “Keeping the peace together, leaving no one behind”.

Participants

The competition is open to secondary school students and pupils from ASPnet primary and nursery schools.

Jury

A jury has been set up to judge the audiovisual creations submitted. It reserves the right not to award any prize.

Price

There are 2 prizes.
● The Grand Prize (500€) ● The Jury Prize (250€) The winning short films will be presented at the UNESCO Sound Week 2023.
