When sound creates image

International school competition in partnership with UNESCO and aimed at the ASPnet network
Edition 2025: "Listening to each other

Presentation

This branch of the competition is open exclusively to the UNESCO Associated Schools Network.

The “When Sound Creates Image” school competition, in collaboration with UNESCO, is back for a 4th edition!

With original music by singer, composer and musician Thomas Dutronc, we’re inviting students (from kindergarten to high school) from ASPnet schools to create a short film lasting 1 minute and 42 seconds.

The theme of this year’s event isListening to each other“.

Focusing on hearing and vision, this competition aims to enable learners to appreciate the richness and diversity of our sensory abilities in a new way, and to develop a range of cognitive, social and emotional skills that are essential for engaging with the world as responsible and compassionate global citizens to invite students to explore the multiple relationships of sound and image. It also aims to raise awareness of the need for attentive listening as a trigger for visual creativity.

Teachers are invited to submit their students’ short films via Wetransfer. A school may submit more than one video, provided that the student authors are different.

Thomas Dutronc was born in Paris on June 16, 1973. Diligent and willing to be at the top of his class, the young boy grew up surrounded by artists, listening to rock’n’roll classics from the age of twelve: Eddy Cochran, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix…

Founder of A.J.T., a trio of guitarists covering the bossa nova and manouche repertoires, Thomas Dutronc joined the Gipsy Project in 2002, with guitarist Biréli Lagrène, one of the greatest heirs of the manouche style.

Respected as a jazz guitarist, Thomas Dutronc also contributed to his childhood friend Matthieu Chédid‘s album, “Qui de nous deux”, and, again with -M-, to the soundtrack of the cartoon “Les Triplettes de Belleville”.

In April 2022, Thomas launches a joint tour with Jacques Dutronc, entitled “Dutronc & Dutronc”.

Each evening for almost two hours, they revisit Jacques Dutronc’s hits from the 60s and 70s, with more pop and rock arrangements. They also cover a number of Thomas Dutronc songs, including “J’aime plus Paris”, “Comme un manouche sans guitare” and “Aragon”.

Thomas Dutronc is sponsoring UNESCO’s 20th Sound Week in January 2023. An opportunity for him to denounce the use of ultra-compressed sound on streaming platforms.

Thomas Dutronc is honored to compose the soundtrack for the 2025 edition of the “Quand le son crée l’image” competition.
