The Place au son 2025 competition aims to create phonically viable terraces, where people can hear and talk to each other without raising their voices; it encourages teams of designers to find a balance between the existing sound environment (traffic, bursts of voices, cutlery, crockery, presence of living things) and that of human activities generated by the arrival of new uses for terraces; the challenge is to design original spatial arrangements and choose materials that contain sound ambiences within an acceptable perimeter; to create a perceptible rhythm between daytime and night-time atmospheres; to find shapes that can regulate the propagation of sound, reduce sound levels and counter the “rise” of night-time sound volumes to windows; to consider the comfort of both consumers and local residents.
