Patron of the 6th UNESCO Sound Week “The sound in our films gives voice to the spoken word and maps out the geography of places. The sound writing of cinema has just been turned upside down by the great technical advances in the means of recording sound in the field. In the twenty-one years we’ve been making films together, whether fiction or documentary, we’ve always paid close attention to sound recording, because sound does more than accompany the image; it raises awareness, informs and inspires dreams. Sound is the very essence of spectacle and cinema. We’ve often “given the floor” to people who rarely have it, and we’re always careful to give a high quality of listening to the grain of each person’s voice. What we’re always looking for is for each viewer to have confidence in their own judgment of what they hear or see.
