As part of UNESCO’s 22nd Sound Week, from January 20 to February 2, 2025, and in conjunction with the reopening of Notre-Dame, the documentary concert film “L’Archéoconcert: le passé a des oreilles à Notre-Dame de Paris” will be premiered at the Pathé Wepler on Friday, January 24, 2025. Produced thanks to the work of the ANR PHEND project – The past has ears at Notre-Dame coordinated by Brian F.G. Katz, CNRS Research Director in Acoustics at the Institut Jean le Rond d’Alembert (CNRS/Sorbonne University), this film promises an acoustic and musical journey through past centuries in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. This 60-minute concert film plunges you into the acoustic evolution of Notre-Dame over the centuries. From the 12th to the 20th century, eleven emblematic musical pieces heard in the acoustics of the corresponding architecture will enable you to discover the sounds of each era, as our ancestors could hear them.
This return to the sources of the past was made possible thanks to the interdisciplinary research team of the PHEND project, coordinated by Brian F. G. Katz.G. Katz.
The production of this film, in collaboration with the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, is based on visual and acoustic 3D modelling of the cathedral, tracing its evolution from its construction to the present day. To create this acoustic and musical journey, the musical pieces concerned were recorded in the studio and then projected into a virtual acoustic, reconstructed to correspond to each era. Thanks to the Pathé Wepler cinema, equipped with digital projectors for an immersive cinematic experience with Dolby Atmos sound, you’ll be able to fully experience this exceptional event between past, present and future. The evening will be opened by Jean-José Wanegue, administrator of La Semaine du Son. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Brian F.G. Katz, Institut Jean Le Rond and the production team.
