The notion of the decibel is not firmly rooted or evaluated in the minds of the general public, and sound issues are becoming increasingly important in our society, Week of Sound offers hearing aid acousticians and municipalities a sound level meter, the “decibelator”, as Erik Orsenna called it at the 22nd UNESCO Sound Week last January.
It’s an educational program designed to raise awareness of sound and encourage reflection on the social issues surrounding sound, such as early detection of hearing loss, and the importance of a peaceful environment for better living together. living together.
This creation, produced by Préventec on the initiative of La Semaine du Son, has a simple aim: to familiarize the general public with the notion of the decibel.
But why?
Quite simply because this unit of measurement is not very well rooted in people’s minds. Just as we can feel cold or heat without difficulty thanks to the degree Celsius, the notion of the decibel is little perceived and even less evaluated by the general public, except when noise is too loud and causes auditory discomfort.
La Semaine du Son” is proposing to install this device as a sign or flag in all hearing aid stores. In this way, the public will be able to get a precise idea of the noise level to which they are subjected in real time, and to consider the hearing aid specialist as a referent of our perception of sound.
The first “decibelizer” has just been put into service in front of Courbevoie town hall, enabling passers-by to check ambient noise levels and decibel values. The first of many!
